An expressive carved wooden Madonna, attributed to France, crowned with roses and standing with her gaze gently lowered and one hand resting across her chest. Deeply folded robes and a sweeping mantle give the figure a graceful, sculptural presence, with carved detail continuing around the back.
Traces of gilding remain across the worn surface, where pale gesso and warm timber create a muted palette of ivory, brown and gold. Her softly modelled face retains a quiet, contemplative beauty.
An incised maker’s mark is present near the base; the maker has not been identified.
Shows substantial wear and losses, including a missing right hand, damage to fingers on the remaining hand, cracks and losses to the timber, gesso and gilt finish. Please refer to the detailed photographs.
