An expressive pair of antique majolica cachepots, probably French, circa 1900, with sculptural rooster-head handles and richly detailed relief decoration. Birds and flowering stems adorn the bodies, framed by lattice panels, ornamental borders and gently scalloped rims. Small mask feet complete their elaborate form.
The lustrous glazes move between olive green and warm chestnut brown, pooling in the moulded details to give the surface depth. Beautiful duck egg blue interiors provide a softer contrast, with fine crazing and some wear adding to their character.
Lovely displayed together on a console or sideboard, their decoration is equally compelling viewed from either side. A distinctive pair with generous colour, texture and presence.
No chips or repairs. Crazing and some wear to the interior glaze and underneath base.
