A small cream Italian maiolica jug, dating provisionally to the late 18th or early 19th century.
Its softly rounded body rests on a circular pedestal foot, with gentle ribbing, a curved handle and a small face modelled beneath the pouring lip. This understated detail gives the jug a distinctive character, revealed as the piece is turned.
The creamy glaze has delicate speckling and subtle variations in tone, beautifully complementing its sculptural form. A lovely piece displayed alone or among a collection of pale ceramics.
Small chips and glaze losses to the spout, rim, handle and foot, with interior discolouration.
