A rare nineteenth-century French majolica wall match holder by Thomas Sergent, modelled as an expressive grotesque mask. The open mouth forms a small receptacle, framed by curling foliage and scrollwork in rich green, cobalt blue, ochre and aubergine glazes.
The softly coloured face and exaggerated features lend the piece a theatrical character, transforming an everyday object into something wonderfully curious. Made to hang on the wall, it brings colour and sculptural detail to a collection of treasured finds.
Bears the painted T.S. maker’s mark to the reverse.
Condition: Glaze crazing, surface wear and chips with losses to the glazed decoration, as shown in the photographs.
Dimensions: 18cm
